The Serious Signs of Adult Asthma: How to Tell Your Asthma is a Problem

Asthma, a condition that affects the breathing tubes in your lungs, has become increasingly common in recent years. When you think of Asthma you think back to those times as children having to carry around those inhalers in case of a flare-up.

Asthma can largely subside as we grow into adulthood. However, severe cases of asthma can return or even last well into adulthood. If you are trying to figure out if you have a case of adult asthma, here are some signs to help you indicate if you have a serious problem.

Symptoms to Spot

It can be easy to overlook certain symptoms, especially when it comes to asthma. However, you should be aware of these common signs:

  • Loss or shortness of breath
  • Coughing frequently, even during the night
  • Trouble being able to sleep
  • Feeling weak or gassed when you are exercising
  • Feeling constantly tired or moody
  • Wheezing or coughing during and/or after exercise
  • Showing signs of a cold or allergies such as a runny nose, coughing, etc.

If you are consistently experiencing these symptoms even as an adult, it is likely that you indeed have asthma. You must be aware, especially because severe asthma can be fatal.

Factors to Watch

There are several factors that you should be aware of that can cause asthma symptoms in adults:

Dust Mites

The common household pest known as dust mites can cause flare-ups in people with asthma. This can occur because their fecal pellet droppings and shedding can create allergens in the air.

Infections

Certain infections that affect your respiratory system can be a catalyst to a flare-up. Infections like colds or congestion can cause major problems.

Pollen, Mold, and Pet Dander

Just like dust mites, other allergens like pollen and mold can affect your asthma. Be careful of exposing yourself to high concentrations of these two, as it can prove to be potentially dangerous.

Smoke

Smoking is a classic inducer of asthma. Someone with Asthma should not be around smokers or places with heavy concentrations of smoke.

Changes in Temperature

Changes in weather another factor. Things such as drastic changes in temperature, cold weather, or humidity in the air can cause issues.

Stress

Adverse emotional conditions as well as stress and anxiety can make it difficult for your asthma. Stress is a big problem, especially for adults with onset asthma.

Treatments

There are several ways to treat your asthma. Medications like Advair Diskus can help prevent flares in your system. Corticosteroids, an anti-inflammatory drug, can also be an option.

You can also make lifestyle changes such as staying away from triggers and reasonably exercising that will allow you to live more securely with your asthma.

Thrive With Adult Asthma

As someone with adult asthma, it is important to remember your triggers and how to deal with them. But asthma shouldn’t keep you from doing the things you love.

Asthma is treatable and can be dealt with if you take action. Take control of your asthma and thrive because you deserve to live your life to the fullest
