Over 70% of Americans take some sort of health supplement.
Health supplements are a great way to get the added nutrition, vitamins, and minerals you need when you’re not getting them from food. Most Americans are extremely busy, making it more and more difficult to slow down and fill their plates with nutritious foods.
When it comes to buying health supplements, it can be confusing. The shelves of grocery stores are lined with hundreds of types of supplements, making the buying process all the more overwhelming.
If you’re having trouble selecting a supplement, here are 5 questions you need to ask before popping any pills.
1. Is It Safe?
The goal of taking a supplement is that it would benefit you, not harm you. So, you must ask yourself, is the supplement safe to take?
There might be a couple of reasons to ask this question, but one reason would be if you’re taking medications for any illness or condition. Some supplements or ingredients in the supplement might counteract your medication. Just because it’s considered safe, doesn’t mean this is true for everyone.
2. Do I Need This Supplement?
Are you getting enough vitamin A in your diet through whole foods? Or iron? If so, you probably don’t need a supplement.
Before you set out looking for supplements, as yourself: what are the purposes for this supplement? What are you trying to achieve? Or, do you have a medical problem and are trying to get rid of it?
It is possible to overdose on a supplement and causes some damage to your body. Be sure to check with your doctor first before starting any supplement regimen to verify that you will benefit from the supplement.
3. What is The Research Behind This Supplement?
Many supplements on the market today are not what they say they are. They have no clinical studies behind them and promote false claims.
One of the best ways to make sure you get a researched-based supplement is through your doctor. You can check and see if they have any recommendations, or if they sell certain brands in their office.
If you prefer to shop online or in-store, research the ingredients to make sure they’re safe for you and have research behind them.
4. What Are The Added Ingredients?
The ingredients in the supplements are just as important as the brand and the research. In some supplements, there may be fillers or other additives that might upset your digestive system or that you’re allergic to.
Doing a thorough reading of the added ingredients in the supplement may save you several health problems.
5. Is The Brand Reputable?
Unfortunately, there are supplement brands out there looking to make a big buck and don’t care about the health of the public. There are class-action lawsuits against certain health supplement brands that promote false advertising.
Do your research on your brand to make sure it’s reputable with no lawsuits or negative records.
