8 Health Benefits of Dark Roast Coffee

Nearly half of all Americans enjoy a cup of coffee each day. It’s one of the most popular beverages in the world, along with water and tea. Of those who drink coffee, many prefer the bold flavors of dark roast coffee over the brighter notes of lighter blends. However, some people wonder if it’s safe to consume coffee on a daily basis.

There’s good news for the coffee-lovers of the world. Drinking a cup of dark roast from Redber coffee roasters is actually good for the body. The following health benefits will give any coffee enthusiast even more reason to pour themselves a second mug.

1. Promotes Weight Loss

Want to lose a few extra pounds? Drinking coffee may give a person’s metabolism the boost it needs to burn more calories and lose weight. Not only does coffee help suppress hunger, but it also helps to boost energy levels. Those who drink coffee regularly and follow a healthy diet plan tend to drop weight faster than those who avoid it.

Contrary to popular belief, it’s not just the caffeine content that helps people lose weight. Dark roast coffee contains N-methyl pyridinium ions. These ions only form during the roasting process, and darker roasts produce more ions than lighter roasts. N-methyl pyridinium ions work by stimulating the body and regulating glucose levels.

2. Nourishes the Body

Dark roast coffee contains copious amounts of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Drinking coffee replenishes vitamin E and glutathione levels. These antioxidants help remove toxins from the body, improve immune function, and boost red blood cell production. Light roasts also contain these nutrients, but dark roast coffee has higher concentrations of them.

Many B vitamins are found in dark roast coffee. Riboflavin, sometimes called B2, is one of them. This essential vitamin is vital for cell growth and development, and it also helps the body process amino acids. Another vitamin found in dark roast coffee is pantothenic acid, also known as vitamin B5. Pantothenic acid helps convert food into energy.

3. Better on the Stomach

Many people associate frequent coffee consumption with heartburn. Some choose to steer clear of coffee altogether to avoid the unwanted symptoms of acid reflux. However, drinking dark roast may actually help combat an upset stomach. Dark roasts tend to be less acidic than lighter varieties.

Coffees with a higher pH are gentler on the stomach. Roasting coffee beans longer helps to increase pH levels, reducing the risk of GERD. Once again, N-methyl pyridinium ions play a role. Dark roast coffees with a higher concentration of N-methyl pyridinium may help to reduce gastric acid production.

4. Lower Risk of Cancer

Can drinking dark roast coffee help prevent cancer? As it turns out, cancer cells don’t like the antioxidants found in coffee. These antioxidants work like an army to seek out and destroy toxic cells before they wreak havoc on the body.

Free radicals damage healthy cells. Scientists have also determined there is a direct link between free radicals and certain types of cancer. Since dark roast coffee contains more antioxidants, drinking a cup each day will significantly reduce the number of free radicals in a person’s body.

5. Boost Brain Health

A person is only as old as their brain. Unfortunately, dementia affects nearly 50 million people worldwide. Dementia is a degenerative disease that affects a person’s memory, thinking, and behavior. Alzheimer’s disease is the most commonly diagnosed form of dementia.

Dark coffee drinkers may have the upper hand when it comes to preventing dementia. Research shows that regularly consuming caffeine may help reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Caffeine may even help prevent other neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson’s disease.

6. Healthier Liver

The liver is the body’s primary filter. It works to remove waste and toxins. Once blood leaves the stomach, it must pass through the liver before heading elsewhere. Unfortunately, liver disease may impair this essential function.

As it turns out, drinking dark coffee is actually good for the liver. When coffee passes through the digestive tract, it produces a chemical called paraxanthine. This compound may help prevent fatty liver disease and cirrhosis. Studies show that drinking two cups of dark coffee per day reduces the risk of liver cancer by 43 percent.

7. Lower Risk of Diabetes

Type-2 diabetes develops if a person’s body loses its ability to produce enough insulin. There are many risk factors for developing diabetes, including genetics, obesity, and age. After receiving a type-2 diabetes diagnosis, a patient must monitor their blood sugar levels to avoid potentially deadly side effects.

However, drinking a daily cup of dark roast coffee may help lower the risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Experts believe that N-methyl pyridinium plays a role in this phenomenon. This compound seems to increase insulin production and improve glucose levels. However, caffeine may have the opposite effect. Some coffee drinks find that drinking too much caffeine causes blood sugar levels to spike. If a person is sensitive to caffeine, they should consider switching to a decaffeinated dark roast blend.

8. Increase Serotonin Production

People who drink coffee tend to be happier than those who avoid it. Researchers don’t believe this is a coincidence. There seems to be a correlation between dark roast coffee and serotonin levels. Those who drink at least two cups a day produce more serotonin.

Serotonin is crucial to preventing and fighting depression. Nicknamed the “happy hormone,” serotonin works by regulating mood, sleep, and digestion. It impacts every system in the body. Unfortunately, some people don’t make enough of this hormone. Drinking coffee may help boost serotonin production and improve a person’s overall mood. It works as an all-natural antidepressant.

Brew a Mug for Your Health

There are many reasons a person should incorporate dark roast coffee into their daily routine. Dark coffee doesn’t just taste great, but it also provides multiple health benefits. Drinking two cups each day nourishes the body with plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. From preventing disease to boosting a person’s mood, this miracle beverage does it all. Go ahead and pour that second cup. Your body will thank you later.
