How to Not Let Your Embarrassment Get In the Way of Dental Treatment

Toilet paper on the bottom of your shoe, tripping on the sidewalk, missing a button on your shirt – these are reasons to feel embarrassed but not going to the dentist. Taking care of your teeth and gums is an important part of your overall health.

If you feel embarrassed to go to the dentist because you haven’t been in several years or because you feel ashamed about the state of your teeth, you’re not alone. Many people experience the same thing.

But you can overcome this feeling! This article addresses common reasons people feel embarrassed about going to the dentist and how you can change your thinking.

Embarrassed to Go to Dentist Because of Cavities

You think you probably have a cavity … or five and you desperately want to avoid facing a dentist. Cavity fillings are generally minor and while uncomfortable they are not excruciating and dentists are very familiar with the procedure. Most dentists will not judge you for having cavities and they may be able to give you suggestions so you don’t get any more.

Finally, if you don’t get cavities filled, the condition of the tooth could get worse. Think about the benefits of going to the dentist now and getting the problem fixed before it becomes serious. Get the facts about how important regular dental visits are.

Talk to the dentist before your visit and express your concern about having cavities. You might be surprised at how reassuring the dentist will be.

Embarrassed to Go to the Dentist Because of Bad Teeth

Bad teeth embarrassed to go to dentist? Dentists see hundreds or thousands of patients a year. They’ve seen it all and they still want to help.

If you have tooth decay, gum disease, overcrowding, or any other dental concern, your dentist has seen the same thing with other patients and has the knowledge and skills to help you.

Embarrassed to Go to the Dentist Because of Lifestyle

No one likes a lecture and many people feel too embarrassed to go to the dentist because of their lifestyle choices. Whether it’s smoking or too much sugar, lifestyle can have a negative effect on oral health. But seeing a dentist can help.

If you are feeling anxious about your appointment try relaxing activities before your appointment like soft music, meditation, or deep breathing. Assure yourself that you are making a good decision to improve your health by visiting the dentist.

Leave Your Appointment Smiling

Many people feel too embarrassed to go to the dentist but overcoming that feeling is possible. Try contacting your dentist before the appointment to explain your apprehension. Practice relaxing activities if you’re feeling anxious. And finally, find a dentist that is kind and understanding (most of them are!).

You can take charge of your oral health today. Make a dental appointment and know what it feels like to be proud of your smile!
